Candidate: President

I have been a member of the National Cockatiel Society for 16 years, since the spring of 1991 when my family got its first pet cockatiel, “Buttercup”. It wasn’t long before one bird turned into dozens and my interest evolved into a passionate and fulfilling hobby.

In 1993, I attended my premier cockatiel show and what an eye-opening experience that was! I soon realized that if I was going to raise cockatiels that I was going to breed the best quality birds that I could possibly breed, whether for pets or for exhibition.

Wanting to become more involved in NCS, I became co-State Coordinator of New Jersey in 1995. In 1999, my work to promote NCS was rewarded with the State Coordinator of the Year Award. That year I had set up several educational displays at local bird club meetings and bird fairs. I visited middle schools and gave basic care and genetics lessons to science classes. In 2002 I gained status as a member of the NCS Judges Panel where I am able to continue teaching novice and advanced exhibitors alike about cockatiel standards and genetics. Cockatiel exhibitions are a great avenue for passing on my knowledge and experiences and I look forwarding to meeting new people (both pet and breeders alike) as they become enthralled in the hobby.
Currently I serve as a Board of Director for the NCS where I function as the NCS Points Registrar. My work on various committees includes developing the National Specialty Show, the Hall of Fame Program, and revising the NCS exhibition classifications to encompass to the newer mutations.

I have specialized in Lutino mutations since 2001, culminating years of work with two honors that I hold in very high regard - being the breeder and exhibitor of the premier Hall of Fame and Supreme Hall of Fame Cockatiel with a Lutino Pearl Pied hen, “Sunburst”, and winning the prestigious “Higgins” Trophy for Best Cockatiel Bred and Banded by the Exhibitor, at the 2005 National Cage Bird Show in Dallas, Texas, with a Lutino Pied cock.

In addition to NCS, I am a member of several national and local organizations including Society of Parrot Breeders and Exhibitors, American Federation of Aviculture, International Parrotlet Society, and Raleigh Durham Caged Bird Society. In 1999, I co-founded the Mid-Atlantic Cockatiel Breeders and Exhibitors (MACBE), a group focused on helping local bird clubs host and organize cockatiel exhibitions. To date, MACBE has hosted 22 exhibitions in six different states. I am presently the Chairman of the Board of MACBE.

  • I will enthusiastically endorse Josh Maple as NCS’s new president !! During the past few years that Josh & I have known each other, I have come to rely on his unparalleled knowledge of pedigrees, breeding and visual attributes regarding these wonderful birds.

I sincerely believe that it is necessary for our new president to represent the pinnacle of achievements within the National Cockatiel Society itself. Having accomplished what most breeders only dream of, Josh Maple has graciously offered this new period of his hobby to the education and advancement of this beloved society.

He continues to act as mentor for countless numbers of breeders who have looked to Josh for guidance on a variety of topics including diet/nutrition, breeding set-ups, pedigrees and the genetic influences that each line passes on. His innate sense of pairings leaves me in awe to this day, as it seems such a natural process to him when selecting birds from an aviary to pair as future breeding stock.

I also believe that he has the foresight and knowledge to lead our group into the next level of professionalism. His ideas are many and for each new improvement that he has earmarked for his term as president, the resources & team of volunteers stand ready to help him realize.

I honestly cannot think of a better choice for NCS’s new president and I am both honored and excited that he would consider the opportunity.

    Sincerely,
    Don Mertes

  • • I believe Josh Maple has the knowledge, passion, intelligence, vision, dedication, energy and fresh approach needed to launch NCS into the next decade. I believe he is the person to harness the latest technology to reach new demographics, opening up new avenues for NCS growth. I also believe he is capable of rallying fellow members to become more proactive towards change! His knowledge of pedigrees and lines potent for desired traits, as evidenced by his successful breeding program and resultant awards, commands respect from most Cockatiel breeders, Novice or Advanced. He takes the process of improving the Cockatiel as serious business. He is the Donald Trump of Cockatiels! I admire him for all of these attributes.

  • When I think about Josh Maple I think of someone who has an innate talent to see the "big picture" and the willingness to teach. Alot of the popularity of exhibition of cockatiels has to do with Josh Maple getting people to come to shows. He'll go so far as to foster them on how to travel to cockatiel shows right down to helping them with their travel and reservations!

Josh Maple is definately my mentor when it comes to cockatiel care, exhibiting, and leadership. He is always willing to see the "big picture" and he shows people how to bring out the best in themselves! That is truely a sign of a GREAT leader. Good luck Josh!

  • The one thing that touched me about Josh was his own willingness to help you improve your breeding lines. I hope I don't get into trouble saying this but, when he saw one of our bred and banded Lutinos, we came home with a finely crested male to use to get "that crest" in her offspring.

Now if only she would get interested!

  • Josh has my vote for President of NCS. He would bring a fresh perspective to NCS that is desperatly needed. Being fairly new to cockatiels I am impressed with Josh's knowledge, maturity and willingness to help novices learn all they can without expecting anything in return. He doesn't hold back for fear that you could surpass him at exhibitions, he truly puts the birds first and wants everyone to succeed. It is an admirable quality that you do not find often in a competition environment. I think Josh could lead NCS to a higher and more professional level.
